Food is mouth watering. I had bento box. It tastes as good as it looks. Service was good. Environment is excellent....................................................
Great food. Imbuing dishes with a seasonal feel and bringing out the natural flavors of the ingredients are very important parts of this style of Japanese cuisine......Tokyo Express successfully done it. The restaurant- wait staff are all very polite and treat diners with exceptionally thoughtful hospitality.Their deep admiration of the seasons and warm thoughtfulness towards the customer reflects a sense of aesthetics that prizes tranquility and simplicity.
i want to start with their customer service. i am totally amazed with their behavior. Tokyo express just won my heart. as they just started they don't accept amex caird. and i didn't have cash with me and bill was 2k. the owners came and told us "It's totally alright and you can pay your bill whenever you drop by." i told them to send a waiter with me i will give him money from the nearest atm booth. they were like "no no it's ok. pore eshe diye gelei hobe." i don't know if this is how a restaurant should treat their customers. but this was really a great one. definitely going back there again and again.
Now comes the food we ordered Assorted Sushi Tk. 590, Prawn Tempura Tk. 550, Fried Prawn Maki Tk. 360, & Chicken Sticky Fried Rice Tk. 220. total bill was tk. 2006 (including water and vat). it was worth every single penny.
Assorted Sushi was really good. highly recommended for those who likes sushi.
Prawn Tempura was mind blowing. it will tickle your taste bud with its amazing taste with sweet and sour sauce.
Fried Prawn Maki was good. but i ate those two supper delicious item before, so was craving more for them :(
Chicken Sticky Fried Rice with that sauce was great.
Definite going back there for Prawn Tempura and Assorted Sushi :D
After hearing numerous reviews from people on facebook recently, I decided to try this place out with a friend. I had expected a regular restaurant with good exterior and interior design. Was a bit disappointed in that front as apart from 2 x-stand banners on the road, it is difficult to identify. The outside is also not very organized and hence I was a bit worried entering. But the interior was a pleasant surprise with black themed posh decor. The staff were also very friendly and helpful while ordering.
In terms of the food (the review you guys are actually waiting for), we had ordered Chicken Nanban (tk. 360), Grilled Octopus and Squid (tk. 450) and Osaka Spicy Beef (tk. 590).
Chicken Nanban - tender chicken pieces with some sort of sweet concoction as the sauce. Although not to my taste, people who like honey glazed chicken type items in other restaurants, will surely like it.
Grilled O&S - this was my most favorite item. Reminded me of the same from Fool's Diner, but this had a crunchier feel to it at times and the pieces were larger. So you can actually enjoy the taste before you swallowing. Also the soya sauce dip added much to the flavor.
Osaka Spicy Beef - initially I had this with the sticky rice. But the sticky rice wasn't very sticky and I later had the beef stand-alone. It's very tender and melts in the mouth, with the right amount of spicy.
I also tried their Iced Lemon Tea and it took me back to El toro (although slightly sweeter). :)
Chicken Nanban - A kind of new in town recipe but nothing exceptional. Its actually boneless pieces of friend chicken with some thousand island or tartar sauce. But the significance of Nanban Sause wasnt any exceptional. (7/10 rating)
Grilled squid and octopus - quite good. different from most of the other places where they serve friend calamaris. (7/10 rating)
Spicy Salmon Maki Roll - Had high expectation on it since the restaurant calls it Tokyo Express. Although the presentation was very nice, however it was not tasty at all. It should have raw/smoked salmon inside the maki, but they stuffed it with cooked salmon with some kind of salad dressing or sauce which is very unlikely to find inside any Maki Roll or Sushi... (2/10 rating)
Decided to pay a visit to Tokyo Express - took us few minutes to find the place. If you are coming from Gulshan-Banani Brdige-end Just do a left on Road 9 then take the first right. Restaurant is on the ground floor and before you reach the main entrance you pass a few tables occupied by mostly university student types and smokers.
As I went in, first thing I noticed is that the restaurant has very poor acoustics and was very loud - specially the inside rooms.
I asked the Waiter to explain the menu as he did, I was unable to understand half of what he said - problem with both his English and Bangla pronunciation.
The decor was average, Steel cutleries already showing wear and narrow ends of chopsticks are worn out – the shiny coating has come off exposing the wood like material. Tokyo Express should provide disposable or better quality chopsticks as micro food particles can easily stick to the exposed material.
We were just given one small empty sauce bowl for our soy sauce/wasabi mix to dunk our sushi - there were two of us and they should have given us two sauce bowl as I personally do not like to share my sauce bowl with others.
We ordered the the assorted sushi dish, Chicken Nanban and Osaka spicy beef and fried rice.
The Sushi tasted quite good 2 pieces each - of prawn, cuttlefish and salmon. The sushi rice could be of better quality. This would make the sushi extremely good.
Chicken Nanban is an average dish but was quite delicious. Made with ice cube sized chicken breast pieces on a light sauce. Sauce tasted like Oyster sauce with soy sauce and sugar added in. A very plain dish.
Osaka spicy beeft also tasted very nice - dry shredded beef cooked in hot and light teriyaki sauce and spring onion. The dish was quite tasty.
Fried rice also tasted nice but seemed just a tad bit oily. Cooked in less oil the dish would taste just as good.
The watermelon juice was average; it was naturally sweet but lacked body and volume.
Bill was just above Taka 2000.
For the price Tokyo express is a good value with decent food. Although I was not wowed by any of the dishes, I was not disappointed either.
Definitely recommended for sushi (at least for the price) and casual lunch and dinner. The menu choice is very limited; I would advice the owners to add more items.
