Pumpkin Oats Smoothie

Have you been bitten by the smoothie bug yet? Remember when I said life is really easy when you allow the three S's to hold centre court on your table - Soups, Salads and Smoothies? Convenient, make ahead, comforting and often a meal in one are adjectives that come to mind when I think of them.

I like to take advantage of seasons while planning my meals. With the weather now quite pleasant, a touch of pie spices really bring our flavours. While the West has taken warmly to garam masala, we have begun to love the magic of pumpkin pie spice here. With the predominant aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg and all spice, it's an easy spice mix to make at home. If all else fails, just use ground cinnamon with a pinch of garam masala. All you need is pleasing undertones as they make fall flavours shine!

This smoothie was born out of a firm favourite, the papaya oats smoothie which is my early morning energiser. As the weather changes, I begin to look for new inspiration. The Sweet Potato Smoothie was one such result, and this Pumpkin Oats Smoothie another. This one is especially good for now since it had banana and oats in there too, so is more filling and packs a substantial glassful. As most smoothies go, you can do the prep beforehand and just whiz it together before you need it.

I like to roast the pumpkin and puree it with pie spices when warm, then make single or double serving portions and freeze them in Ziploc bags. To make life simpler, I freeze sliced bananas in bags too. I bring the pumpkin puree down into the fridge the night before. The banana goes in straight from the freezer resulting in a nice thick smoothie. At times I don't even need ice! Oh and, you can always throw in some ground flax seeds instead of oats for a change.

  1/2 cup fresh pumpkin puree {from 200g pumpkin, roasted}
  1 sliced banana, frozen
  1/4 cup oats flour
  1 cup yogurt
  1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice {or cinnamon}
  2/3 cup milk
  2 tbsp honey {as required, can be skipped if pumpkin is sweet}
  Ice as required

  Place everything in the bowl of blender and blend until smooth.
